Windows Server 2008/2008R2

Most editions of Windows Server 2008 are available in x86-64 and 32 versions.Windows Server 2008 is available in the editions listed below,

1.Windows Server 2008 Standard --->>standard edition core-edition  also available(roles are less)

2.Windows Server 2008 Enterprise--->> Enterprise edition is most commonly using os.

3.Windows Server 2008 Datacenter--->>Advance version

4.Windows HPC Server 2008--->>High performance Server edition

5.Windows Web Server 2008--->>Basic edition (roles are less)


Features of windows server 2008/2008R2

1.Server Core---->>> All configuration and maintenance is done entirely through command-line interface windows

2.Active Directory roles--->>>Active Directory roles(ADDS) are expanded with identity, certificate, and rights management services. Active Directory, until Windows Server 2003, allowed network administrators to centrally manage connected computers, to set policies for groups of users, and to centrally deploy new applications to multiple computers.

3.Failover Clustering--->>>Windows Server 2008 offers high-availability to services and applications through Failover Clustering.

4.Hyper-V--->>>Hyper-v like Vmware it is a virtual machine.....etc

Minimum system requirements

Here i am using Windows Server 2008 Enterprise

Processor -->>1 GHz
RAM --->>1 GB
HDD-->>40 GB or more

If you configure the server on vpc or vmware then keep this requirements,but in vpc/vmware you cant use hyper-v.
